Join the Dr. Seuss & His Friends Book Club The Legacy of Dr. Seuss Theodor
Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925 and went to Oxford. There, he met
Helen Palmer, whom he wed in 1927. After returning to the United States, he published
cartoons and articles for a humor magazine called Judge. His cartoons also appeared
in other major magazines, such as Life and Vanity Fair. His first children's book,
And, Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street, published in 1937, was reportedly rejected
by 28 publishers as being too outlandish for children! In 1954, Life Magazine
published a report on illiteracy among school children. This prompted Dr. Seuss's
publisher to ask him to write a book using 250 words that children should learn
to read and The Cat in the Hat was born. Using only 220 words, Dr. Seuss introduced
children to the irreverent, hat-wearing cat and, at the same time, the book brought
instant success to Dr. Seuss. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was published in
1957, introducing the world's children to the Grinch, and Little Cindy Who. How
The Grinch Stole Christmas has become part of our holiday, as natural as the Christmas
tree. In 1960, Green Eggs and Ham was published using only 50 different words.
It became widely known that the Dr. Seuss stories were fun and motivated children
to learn to read. Dr. Seuss remained a prolific writer of children's books, including
publishing The Lorax in 1971. Dr. Seuss's long and varied career includes children's
book author and illustrator, political cartoonist, advertising illustrator and
documentary filmmaker. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1984 as well as three Academy
Awards during his lifetime. His 46 children's books, such as The Lorax, How the
Grinch Stole Christmas and Green Eggs and Ham, have left a lasting legacy for
children today and those to come in future generations. Presenting Dr.
